Browse the FAQ →Financial aid estimates are approximations of a process that is genuinely complicated and that changes from year to year. Federal methodology gets revised, institutional aid formulas differ sharply between schools and are often not published in full, and the same household income can produce very different awards depending on assets, family size, the number of children enrolled at once, and how a particular school chooses to treat home equity or a small business. An estimator can get you into the right range; it cannot replicate a specific school's award letter.
If an estimate looks far off from an actual award you received, we would like to hear about it, and that comparison is one of the more valuable things a reader can send. Telling us the inputs you used, the estimate you got, and the actual figure — without any personally identifying detail — helps us see whether our assumptions are drifting from reality. You should never need to send us a tax document, a Student Aid Index letter, or anything containing your name or Social Security number, and we would ask that you do not.
Deadlines shift, program names change, and aid rules get rewritten between cycles. If you notice a date, program description, or eligibility rule on this site that no longer reflects current guidance, a note with a link to the authoritative source is exactly the sort of report we can verify and act on quickly.
We are not a school, a financial aid office, or a lender, and we have no access to any application. We cannot check your FAFSA status, tell you what a specific school will offer you, appeal an award, advise on borrowing, or complete any part of an application on your behalf. The financial aid office at the institution you are applying to can do all of those things and is the right place to ask.
